There was guidelines I gave to the judge that explained how to rank the pieces from 1-10 points.
For example, 1 point meant the theme was not present. 5 points meant the theme was present, but was overshadowed by other story elements. 10 points meant that Liminal Spaces were deeply present within the story, and it focused on the theme as its main plot point.
From there it was up to the judge to analyze the story for the theme and rank it according to their thoughts.
I'm not sure if everyone caught on at first that this was themed, rather than just a short horror story contest. Hopefully, next time around everyone will understand that the theme is important to implement for a better score.

I'm just curious, but how did you judge theme? It seems like something a lot of entries struggled with.
