Friends, Decemberween is officially upon us! For the remainder of the year in my house, we're only going to watch horror, sci-fi, and fantasy (MIGHT sneak Shogun in there just because).
There's a LOT of really good horror out and I'm excited!
I'm pretty stoked for the new Alien, and we have not yet seen the new A Quiet Place. I'm very interested in "The Terror" on Netflix. I'm forgetting like 20 others, but what's on your radar?
I think I'm gonna binge Fear Street on Netflix. It looks like it might be awful but that'll be part of the fun. The Terror is on my list for sure, as is Alien and A Quiet Place. Alien looks especially promising.
For me, spooky season must start with a trip to the cider mill for cider and donuts and apple picking. After that it's looking at Halloween decorations at places like Michael's and Home Depot. I eventually move onto the final phase, which is the movies. Poltergeist, Ghostbusters, Monster House... I might throw a novel in there this year, but I'm not sure what. All of that culminates with passing out candy on Halloween. 🎃🎃🎃
Spooky season starts with shopping trips for Halloween decor. I start in late August/early September. We bought 5 foot bat skeletons this year and I’m so excited to put them up in the front yard with headstones and other skeletons. We are going for a spooky graveyard theme. I also make a list of all the horror films I want to watch and add new ones that have recently come out. Creepshow 1 & 2, Return Of The Living Dead 1 & 2 are yearly favorites along with Doctor Sleep. (The list is loooong). I also add spooky novels as well. Currently reading Vampires of El Norte. 🧛🏻♀️
Thanks for including my piece and for the great-looking weekly roundup!
The spooky season for me has to include murder mysteries, cozy or otherwise. My husband and I started by watching Fargo yesterday (his first time). As to reading, I'm in the mood for Agatha Christie, a Lord of the Rings reread, and some Anne of Green Gables (I'd like to finish the series).
I have my pumpkin, jack o' lanterns and skulls decorations out, I've got many pints of maple ice cream in the freezer and I kicked off my Autumn baking over the weekend. Oh, and I'm reading a book about arsenic poisonings in England.
I have been fighting for my life to get into the holiday spirit, but Ohio has been fighting me with sunny days and summer weather.
BUT
today is a knew day and it is dreary and misty and the possibilities are endless.
Here's a few things I've been watching/playing/reading with the AC running to get myself into the holiday spirit...
- The DLC for my favorite lovecraftian fishing sim Dredge came out last month and I did not realize until last week! It was an absolute treat and I'm sad to have finished it, but gosh what a game.
- My partner and I have a guilty pleasure of watching the tv show Ghost Adventures. It has gotten extra strong since I've been dying for anything that makes me feel remotely unsettled or down for the spooky.
- If you like dungeons and dragons lets plays, Oxventure on youtube just started a new campaign inspired by British folk horror called Wyrdwood, and I am absolutely loving it. I only really discovered folk horror as a concept about a year ago, but it quickly became one of my favorite forms of horror right up there with cosmic horror.
- I'm almost finished with Magisteria (not horror, very much nonfiction and very fascinating) but once that's over, on the docket for my fall reading will be House of Leaves and I am very excited/nervous.
- I've been trying to think of some fun nostalgic campy vampire nonsense to watch from my childhood and as of right now I'm itching to watch Underworld. Last year it was Queen of the Damned. The year before that it was the Blade trilogy. You just need some campy vampire stuff that everyone thought was cool in 2004 this time of year.
- I just discovered there's a Dracula ballet! I'm discussing with friends if we should dress up in our most gothic fancy wear and go. The juries still out, but the tickets are surprisingly cheap if you don't care about fancy seating.
All this to say, please please please bring on the fall spooky fun!

Me too Andrew!!! Do you have any that you're especially excited about?

I love the Alien universe. It took me a minute, but I'm fully on board now.
Alien: Romulus was great. And I just finished season one of The Terror last week! It's a slow burn but very well acted.
I love slow burn horror TV shows! I hate when they rush things and just use cheap jump scares, etc. Looking forward to both!
I started off fall with You've Got Mail--spooky! haha
Romance is autumn appropriate

I miss the Midwest cider mills! I love this Brian! Ghostbusters is such a nostalgic choice 👻
Spooky season is my favorite time of the year.

Love these for some cozy fall (or spring for our southern hemisphere peeps) vibes 🍂

Now I get to watch horror movies for a month 😃
Maple ice cream?? I have never had it. But I want it.
Trader Joe's Salted Maple. It's amazing!

Hocus Pocus 😂 sorry not sorry.
Forever and always!
Thanks for the shout-out!
Sadly, switching from Notes to Chat has made Macabre Monday virtually disappear from my view and many others. Sigh.
