I remember buying monster trading cards at the corner store as a kid. I think they were 25 cents and you got six cards and a pink slab of the toughest bubblegum you can imagine.
The cards captivated me, most were stills of famous monster movies. Bela Lugosi, Boris Karloff, Lon Chaney Jr., and I guess that was the beginning.
It wasn’t that long after, I started writing and telling monster stories. I even created magazines and catalogues of these creatures. Some I made up, some were existing canon.
So, as a special vintage throwback, I’ve included a gallery of one of my first monster zines. I think I was around 8 years old.
Do you have any early monster memories?
As a prompt for this week, perhaps we can channel or early selves and write a flash fiction from the POV of a kid discovering the thrill and mystery of the macabre. I know you have it in you.
