Halloween may still be lurking around a far-off corner, but the spooky season never resides more than a stone’s throw away here at Macabre Monday. This week we get a chance to indulge in an unofficial start to Halloween through celebrating everyone’s favorite superstitious day.
We’re talking about Friday the 13th, of course.
There’s so much more substance to Friday the 13th than a string of cheesy slasher movies that grow more and more unwatchable with each sequel. It is a day rooted in folklore and superstition going back many centuries.
Celebrations of Friday the 13th should include the whole Macabre Monday community. To that end, we’ll create a special Macabre Monday on Friday the 13th chat thread this Friday for you to share with our horror community any poem, story, or article that’s appropriate for the day.
Our Friday the 13th thread will be separate from the regular Monday chat thread that accompanies today’s newsletter. Please feel free to join in on the fun on both days.
My own celebration will include debuting two original horror stories this week. My new horror novel, The Crimson Reaper, will be released on Tuesday. Then, on Friday the 13th, the first episode of my comedy horror serial, The Ghost Diaries, will be posted in my Substack newsletter, Strange New Worlds.
Onward to this week’s digest …
The Weekly Digest
A selection of last week’s Macabre Monday posts from our team.
Gather around our campfire as we highlight memorable stories, poems, articles, and notes from last week’s Macabre Monday offerings:
- shared a wickedly creepy tale about a shabti doll in The Shabti. (Go get a copy of her new novel Oceanus while you’re browsing for new books to read.)
- has a clever vampire tale, I’ll Be Damned, which she describes as “bite-sized fiction” that quite literally lives up to that phrase.
- takes us to a mysterious dance club for otherworldly terror in his engrossing tale Danse Macabre.
Finally,
offered up Model Boss, a must-read black comedy.Who is your favorite character from one of the stories featured in the digest? Share your thoughts with us.
