Yesterday, 31 Substack writers posted stories honoring the 66th anniversary of The Twilight Zone. Rod Serling’s show forever changed storytelling on television, writing wonder and horror into some of the tales that embedded themselves within our psyches forever. I have always loved that show, and this week, the glory of horror anthologies has been on my mind.
That led my thoughts to all of you incredible humans here. Each week, I get to read through some of the best fiction on Substack, submitted by people who write stories because they love it, because it is in them. Every single Monday, we get to tune in to an entire season’s worth of stories. Your enthusiasm has grown this little corner of the internet into a thriving, creative hub.
My invitation to all of you is to keep going, write, come up with your own projects and collaborative events. The sky is the limit here. If you haven’t gotten a chance, check out the amazing work done by many of our own Macabre Monday crew. If that isn’t your thing, please keep scrolling to our weekly digest.
And do me a favor: share your favorite Twilight Zone episode in the comments.
I offer you a popular and horrific episode that has always stuck with me (and pops into my head every time I fly). “Nightmare At 20,000 Feet.”
The Weekly Digest
A selection of last week’s Macabre Monday posts from our team.
Gather around our campfire as we highlight memorable stories, poems, articles, and notes from last week’s Macabre Monday offerings:
- offered up part 7 of his current serial, Madisonville Murder. Get in while the getting is good!
- terrified us with a piece of flash fiction, “The Fifth Suit.”
- stunned with her short story, “A Heart Full of Teeth.” In her own words, “Imagine Frankenstein’s monster meets a classic Tunnel of Love carnival ride.”
- took our primal fears to new depths, in a surprising horror story, “Quarries Are Super Deep.”
- gave us “Disputations When Drunk,” a cautionary tale of justice.
- and published an incredible art/writing collaboration inspired by Belle and Sebastian (an indie pop band for the uninitiated), “Judy’s Horses.” The illustrations are to die for, and the story is phenomenal.
Thanks for mentioning Judy's Horses! One of my favorite TZ episodes is The Silence.
thanks for the shout out shaina!
